Happy 23rd birthday to FreeDOS! Through the entire 1980s and in to the 1990s, I had been a big DOS consumer. I used DOS for everything: writing documents for class, doing lab evaluation, dialing in to the campus computer lab. The DOS was liked by me command series. I considered myself something of the DOS “power user” at that time, and I even wrote my own utilities to expand the MS-DOS command line. THEREFORE I was a bit irritated in 1994 when Microsoft announced, by way to do interviews with tech magazines of the right time, that MS-DOS would soon away go. Another version of Windows, they said, would do with MS-DOS away. The global world was moving to Windows.
At the time, “Microsoft Windows” meant Windows 3.1, which was not that great. So I decided to do something positive about that. We could create our own version of DOS, something that caused programs designed for MS-DOS, but our DOS would be free for everyone to use. Other designers got done the same with Linux, I reasoned, so we could do it with DOS surely. Announcing the first effort to make a PD-DOS. I’ll post those here, and let conversation follow.
PD-DOS, I would appreciate direct email to me. I am worked up about PD-DOS, and I hope I can get a combined group began! That announcement of “PD-DOS” or “Public Domain DOS” later grew in to the FreeDOS Project that you know today. Today And, FreeDOS is 23 years old now! While there’s nothing really special about “23 years of age,” I thought we should mark our anniversary by sharing some interesting moments in FreeDOS history. Month All this, I’ve asked others to share their own stories about how they got started with FreeDOS, or the way they joined FreeDOS, or the way they added to FreeDOS, within the FreeDOS Blog Challenge.
And I used to be impressed and humbled to see more and more people react to that challenge. Thanks to everyone who contributed their FreeDOS story! If you would like to talk about your story about how you utilize FreeDOS, please send it to Jim (jhall@freedos…) and we’ll include it as a follow-up guest post. Since we’ve received so many “FreeDOS story” contributions, I intend to collect them into a free ebook, which we’ll make available via the FreeDOS website. We remain collecting FreeDOS stories for the ebook! While everyone has been writing and sharing their memories of FreeDOS, I have already been going right through the archives to share some interesting highlights from FreeDOS history. I hope you liked our thoughts of FreeDOS even as we celebrate the 23rd “birthday” of the FreeDOS Project. To find out more, feel free to download our FreeDOS “press kit” (.zip) which announced the FreeDOS 1.2 distribution. Or go to the FreeDOS Wiki.
