My first experience in Taiwan was in November of 1968 once i arrived in Taipei as a member of the U.S. Navy. Prior to landing, I knew next to nothing concerning this land. I only knew that it was a small island off the eastern coastline of China which it was governed by Chiang Kai-Shek and the Chinese Nationalists.
Upon seeing the neighborhood people, my initial impressions were that they appeared all the were and same dressed very poorly. I thought these were all Chinese language from the mainland also. In 1968, Taiwan or the Republic of China as it was known then formally, was an associate of the United Nations claiming to stand for every one of the people in mainland China. To placate Communist China, Taiwan uses the name “China-Taipei” to participate in the Olympic Games and international organizations such as the World Health Organization.
Communist China still respect Taiwan as a renegade province; however, the Leader of China has been urging peaceful reunification lately. Even though the Nationalist Party is presently in power, Taiwan has a western-style democracy with multiple opposition parties. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is the largest opposition party, and the government was managed by it from 2000-2008 after President Chen Shui-Bian was popularly elected twice.
In 1968 the Republic of China on Taiwan got at least one million servicemen on energetic duty and a huge number as reserves. The primary objective of the armed forces at that right time was to retake the China mainland from Chinese Communist control. Chiang Kai-Shek also had a military presence on the tiny islands of Quemoy and Matsu a few miles off the coast of Fujian Province.
